So what I want to do: I need a place to post pictures of PCBs like this, and annotate them with extra info. Things like "this capacitor is 470uF" and "this chip is an AMD AM28F010 EERPOM"pic.twitter.com/Q6R1KZCgly

now I could do this by getting out ms paint and writing on the picture, but that's gonna be ugly and possibly hard to read and it might cover up important parts of the picture that people want to read. So really I need a way to do annotations on a publicly available image
So what sites exist that let you do this, and are open source? well...
What if you have a fandom for content which comes from another country, and is in another language? How do you translate it? Do you just put it in the comments? do you edit in in-place? You run into the same problems.pic.twitter.com/9b8u8EXl55
So the anime imageboard (the tag-based organizational sort of imageboard, not the 4chan sort of imageboard) site Danbooru has this feature of Notes, which you can put on an image, which creates transparent overlays on textpic.twitter.com/ZnaMGcRZAf
and then you can tap or hover (depending on the type of pointing device) on/over them and get the contents of the note.pic.twitter.com/oeWgEbcRz3
and obviously this gets used primarily for translations, but you also see it get used for pictures like this which are a big selection of characters from different things, so they put little notes on them saying who the characters arepic.twitter.com/N2kUJJj7f5
and Danbooru is open source. What's to stop me from setting up my own copy and just uploading lots of ISA soundcard PCBs? NOTHING!
yes this is a stupid idea. but it's a stupid idea that might work GREAT
BTW before you go googling for Danbooru and checking it out, I must warn you that it is a site for hosting anime art. a lot of that is gonna be pretty fucking NSFW
also I want an award for this if I pull it off. Foone Turing: The first person to see a site for hosting pictures of anime girls and thought "what if this was even nerdier?"
fun fact: I'm actually so much a nerd that I've given a presentation in a university class about different image organization methods and danbooru was one of the examples I used for the most liberal model, where users both apply tags and create tags.
A nice side-benefit of doing it this way is that we get extra functionality that'd be handy for free. Like we can tag the images, to make it easy to find, say, ISA soundcards or PCI Video Cards, and we can set up image-groups to link multiple images of the same board together
BTW, the image I used as an example is here:https://safebooru.donmai.us/posts/468572
