A (hopefully) brief thread about cable television and streaming services. Names will be called. I'll try to keep it short and to the point. A few months ago Spectrum wanted to raise our rates to over $200/mo for cable and web (plus a land line I don't want or use). 1/

They've done the thing with me that cable companies have always done, which is start me on a promo rate that expires after a year or two. If you ask the right way you might get a new promo... if you ask. New customers treated well, but existing ones like shit. Always. 2/

But the market has changed. With the advent of reliable streaming services, the cable company is increasingly obsolete. I got Hulu thru a student subscription to Spotify ($5/mo for both - great deal). I then added Netflix. But this stuff had one weakness... or I did. 3/

And my weakness is sports. I like college football, NHL hockey, NCAA tournament basketball, the occasional NBA game. I love MLB but generally pay for MLB's online package to stream Red Sox broadcasts when not locally blacked out here. (Tampa - mid-size market). 4/

But for everything but the Sox (and for Sox-Rays games), I have to subscribe to something. I did comparison shopping and chose YouTubeTV. Seemed like a good idea at the time. And you know, it has been good. For what I pay, it's a good service. But for one weakness. 5/

They don't give me NBC. It's not clear if the problem's the local network affiliate or the network itself, but it shows up as "on demand only". I can look for NBC shows and watch them... but not live. I do get NBC Sports channel, but not sports on the main network. 6/

I could give a shit about most NBC shows, but the things I've missed this year on NBC have thus far included: the second half of the Super Bowl, the best parts of the winter olympics, and a couple of games so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Which my team is in. 7/

I've complained here about it and they asked me to fill out some Google form asking what network I'd like to see. But this is NBC. One of the big three. What's the big deal here? Want my business? Get it done. I'm not filling in the form again. 8/

So
@YouTubeTV if I miss another major sporting championship on NBC because your service doesn't offer it, then I'm dropping you like a hot potato. Read the rest of this thread if you care. But if you advertise at the Super Bowl, you should be SHOWING the Super Bowl. 9/91 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -

Hi there. We'd like to get a bit more info. Can you please follow us so we can talk more about this over DM? Thanks!

I'm not sure what there is to discuss. You don't carry NBC in my area. It's a huge major network that carries a ton of major sporting events that I keep missing. I've filled out your form already. I can go to DM if you like, but not sure what good it does.
