Let’s talk about the whitewashing of content by food media in Alberta and racist food reviews in @Edmontonsun that continues to be printed despite being told by many people on many occasions that it is offensive (cont.) @hicksonsix @HicksBiz #yeg #edmonton #yegfood #racismpic.twitter.com/ZwAlj4QZ17

I was furious 5 years ago that @Edmontonsun would print a restaurant review on @nongbu_korean stating that a Korean restaurant is “too ethnic” and that the server’s “limited” English made her “useless as an advisor” and I’m just as furious today #yeg

In the wake of the issues at @bonappetit @CBC @CTV_PR and many others. Now that society is woke maybe others will be just as furious as I and my friends have been by @edmontonsun ‘s continued silence on this matter #yeg

So yes... Mr Hicks you’re right racism still exists in Edmonton. You only need to look as far as your own column @edmontonsun FUCKING DO BETTER!! @hicksonsix @HicksBiz #yeg #edmonton #yegfoodpic.twitter.com/cILhvqCZe8

What damage does this type of review have?! When an “ethnic” restaurant newly opens and is trying to bring awareness to Edmontonians for its cuisine and culture... but is criticized for being “too ethnic” by one of the largest publications in the city...

That restaurant now needs to work even harder to convince people to try a cuisine or dish that may be new to them. So yes this is implicit racism. And media has a responsibility to create diversity in our content.

Restaurant reviews in Edmonton Sun from a food writer who has a mindset stuck in the 1950s.

"Too ethnic"? I am speechless. And appalled.

And even more offensive is that The Sun left that story up on the site even after it was questioned. #truestory
