    The covers for the 1st generation Pokémon games in Japan use a bold version of University Roman for the "POCKET MONSTERS" subtitle. It was designed by Michael Daines & Philip Kelly at Letraset from 1972~1983. The subtitle uses small capitals alongside the font's lowercase s.

    Nintendo has previously used VDL fonts in other titles:

    on the Nintendo Switch uses the LogoG font family in both the English and Japanese versions of the game. This font family was produced by VDL, a Japanese foundry. Link:

    See below for information about the fonts used in the logos of the newly announced Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games. The information is the same for all logos of languages which use Latin glyphs (English, Spanish, Italian, German, French).

    Russian type foundry has come out with a statement against the current Russian incursion into Ukraine. The sample text used on their site's store has also been changed to read "Нет войне", Russian for "No to war".

    I was consulted for a video about the widesperead usage of certain gothic fonts in Japanese media. Please take a look:

    New video! Often described as 'Japan's Helvetica', what's the story behind this commonly used font? I kept seeing it in Nintendo games or while visiting Japan, so had to deep-dive into the typography world to find out what the whole fuss was about.

    The current logo uses the font Gilroy EB by Radomir Tinkov. Interestingly, while most weights of this font are available through purchase, the Extra Bold version used in the logo is available for free. Link:

    The logo of "VS. Excitebike" appears to use custom lettering based on the font "Banco", designed by Roger Excoffon for the Fonderie Olive foundry in 1951. According to Excoffon himself, the typeface was a result of "industrial spying". See below for more information:

    Revue has also been used in various parts of the Pokémon franchise, as well as other games:

    The font used in the background of the original Pokémon game covers, along with the reveal trailers for Pokémon Sun, Moon and Ultra Sun and Moon is Revue, designed in 1968 by Colin Brignall. It was also used in the logo of the game Afterburner. Link:

    The "Bowser Oil" signs in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe use a modified version of Revue, a display typeface designed by Colin Brignall in 1968 for Letraset. It sees popular use on posters and signage.

    The "Legends" section of the Pokémon Legends Arceus logo uses a modified Avenir Next Heavy. Avenir was originally designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1987, and released in 1988 by Linotype. "Avenir" is French for "Future". Link:
