Manuel Castells has his work cut out for him as Spain's new universities minister, not least because of the government's separation of higher ed and science & innovation agendas

Hoverfly descending neurons that respond to visual stimuli. New paper from our lab showing how different neurons can be identified physiologically, despite having overlapping response properties. (1)

🧢Got the best field swagger today 🤝At the Minnesota Dragonfly Society meeting. 🔬 Run by local people whose hobby and life long passion is to learn, observe and write about odonata. 📚 They. Know. Everything. Specially where the wild things are.

In winter, you can see these birds in Eel pond. Looking up from my laptop, while working on the 3rd level of the MRC... and seeing them dive and 'pop up' in sync, another reason why working year round was priceless.

And yes, I can also think about ways that this could be abused ( as anything else in life). But the fact that it is absolutely under their control is to me the biggest plus about taking their feedback as a proxy for their readiness for grad school.

And we would be selecting for people that check their biases and have a fundamental understanding of what peer review is about.

As a plus, courses may improve faster ( because feedback that is fair can be implemented). Teachers may be spared from some of the vitriol , which at the moment goes unchecked.

It is, of course, not a matter of not being critical. It is a matter of how such opportunity to be critical is used. ( did they mention the appearance of the instructor?, did they take the task seriously?...etc).

Course evaluations is somewhere the students show truly who they are. How conscientious, critical, mature, fair... you can tell by the way they give feedback, and this is 100% under their control. No need to rely on anyone else.

The instructor of the courses can still be blind to who made the comments...etc, of course. And the grad school that they are applying to could requests these directly from the main administration. ( no need to go through supervisors or instructors)

Why don't we take into consideration the course evaluations given by such individuals on previous courses?
