Every time I watch Altered Carbon all I can think about is if you could upload your brain into a computer, is there any guarantee that's still you? The end result would be a replica of your brain with all your memories and personality, but is it your consciousness?
They kinda touch on that with double sleeving, that seems to create to disjointed but connected self. What if the individual sleeves feel autonomous, but are (sub)consciously guided by an emergent meta conscious that's only partially experienced to either side?

Something like a distributed consciousness. When we define what conscious is, who's to say it has to be embodied in a singular form that understands its totality? Do we even have that today with our singular bodies(sleeves)?
