Is there a word/phrase to describe the phenomenon of a word looking misspelt/alien after prolonged observation? Found myself questioning the word "hole" after looking at it too long. Seems normal now, but for a moment, despite all my instinctual reassurances, felt foreign.

Semantic Satiation, and quite a strange feeling indeed. Makes you briefly appreciate the symbols themselves as well as the message they convey, while losing their familiarity for a moment. You question why it sounds the way it does, why it means what it means, even its etymology

There certainly feels a notion of higher truth preceding said notions, especially regarding the very nature of symbolism and the means & merits by which we define it. Believe a better explanation is found in a realm less bounded by memetic obligations.

This has happened to me. Once I thought the word pencil looked strange.https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/when-even-simplest-word-looks-weird-and-wrong-you-have-wordnesia-180954539/ …

I think the brain starts to realize no singular word has any meaning, tries to propagate the knowledge system wide, realizes that would be catastrophic, and reverts itself back to a state when that word had meaning while you're not paying attention. Either way, it creeps me out.
