It's actually because ETH users are already accustomed to interfacing with smart contracts wherein you initiate by sending Ethereum to an address. If there was an actual ETH giveaway, it would probably look pretty similar to the scam.

That doesn't make sense to me, man. BTC users are also accustomed to sending to addresses expecting to get money back to the address they sent from. That was the entire business plan of satoshi dice (and why they ended up clogging up the network)

I sorta disagree, though Satoshi Dice is a good counter example. I think modern best practices for Bitcoin are to treat addresses as one time use wherever possible, where as ethereum network is far more address specification demanding with it's contracts.
