3 Kingdoms is a book about great strategies. The greatest general was Zhuge Liang. But it would be no fun if the book only highlighted his brilliance. There needed to be other great generals for comparison to really understand what is great strategy.

Zhuge Liang was a great marketer. He went to a tiny village and just chilled and played the harp. The farmers have never seen anything like this. They didn't know anything about him, but mythologized his brilliance. Had he stayed in the university, his fame wouldn't be as great.

Strategy needs to be holistic. You need to consider what you do after you win. If you don't find a way to ensure your survival after your victory, you'll still be killed.

Management 101, prioritize tasks in this order: 1. Immediate and important 2. Not immediate, but important 3. Not important, but immediate 4. No immediate, not important If you're not prepared, the no immediate, but important problem suddenly becomes immediate.

A lot of drama in classic fictions are results of bad task prioritization and risk management. This skill separates the great strategists from mediocre ones. Managers and investors have much to learn from the Chinese classics.

Zhuge Liang was a great strategist because he got done the immediate important tasks, and also provided solutions to not immediate, but important risks. He also had a great birth, great mentors, and great friends. Thus, he was able to become the best among the best.

However, Zhuge Liang would have been useless in warfare with the uneducated. He was able to play mind games with the educated who have previously fallen for his tricks. But the uneducated would attack anyway even when he bluffed. Being too clever doesn't work on peasants.

^ That's my attempt at summarizing/translating. Let me know if you guys want more of this type of content. I didn't do the lecturer justice. I've missed a lot of his jokes, idioms, and more obscure references.
