Yikes at ‘first generation PhD student’ discourse. Being the first person in your family to get a PhD is not comparable to being the first to go to uni. Yeah I’m a first gen astronaught feeling p disadvantaged bc my dad didn’t teach me how to withstand all that G force

I thought the "first gen PhD" thing was like..."I'm the first gen in my family to make it to higher education and here are the added challenges when you make to the PhD" not...that.

I think the idea probably started off like that and then got... diluted

It’s also weird because really only a minority of academics are actually kids of academics? Like there’s issues around class, cultural capital etc and you can feel like a fish out of water as a postgrad, but it’s just nowhere near as significant a divide over a specific factor.

It just feels frustrating when I know fellow PhD students who struggled to even eat growing up, and there are some using the fact their parents aren’t academics as a way they’re marginalised. I’ve never met a grad student whose parent is an academic!

Maybe comparable from a class perspective. First undergrad was at a redbrick & I had never met anyone who had been backpacking around the himalayas & lived in Dubai as a child. But I was actually the odd one out... Those people are unironically tweeting about being 1st Gen PhD.

I’ve always read that as “first generation university student, now doing a PhD”. Is that not what it means?

I agree, also the moral of the story is college and graduate school are at best bewildering experiences if you don’t have anyone to guide you

Agreed. Not even close. I very well could be a “first gen Ph.D.” in our family but hadn’t even considered it a potential accolade. Far too precious.
