Okay so it seems certain senior white medievalists think it's appropriate use a GIF of a blackface character, Papa Lazarou from the League of Gentlemen. It isn't, friends.

For anyone not familiar with the sketch, which is apparently the (totally not racist) UK's 8th most popular of all time, to quote wiki: 'Papa Lazarou is a demonic circus master and collector of wives. He has a rasping voice, an indefinable accent, and blackface.'

Sure, the white creator/actor insists the sketch isn't racist. If you need a little help understanding why it is... well... what are you doing in academia?!

Racism? In your sketch involving a bigamist in blackface??? Who just so happens to have type 3C hair? And wears a Baron Samedi black top hat? It's more likely than you think

        Papa Legba is a loa in Haitian Vodou. He wears white paint around eyes and mouth and a black top hat. Is this mere C O I N C I D E N C E ? ? ? no.

Yes it is the year 2020 and people with PhDs are defending Papa Lazarou as 'not racist' on The Twitter
