Today with the publication of my book, Wild City, I want to celebrate all the incredible people who shared their wild cities with me. People who dedicate so much of their time to observing, encouraging & supporting urban wildlife. Here’s just a few of those people… 🧵

Excited to see these pop up on our local stretch of canal in King’s Cross. As I learnt with in Birmingham, coir rolls allow us to plant up our human-made waterways, creating habitat for wildlife and sucking up pollutants. They look beautiful too! #wildcity

If a weed is simply ‘a plant out of place’ then this dandelion in our front garden is not a weed. Far from it. If we were all to become slightly lazier gardeners - which I don’t feel is a very tall ask - then just think of how much wilder our cities could become!

I once read that gardeners in Singapore were desperately trying to get their hands on a rare plant. The same plant - a tiny rendition of the sun itself - that gardeners tear out of lawns and beds over here. Dandelion flowers sustain pollinators and the seeds feed birds…

Three years ago, during lockdown, I filmed this family of ducks in Trafalgar Square fountain and they inspired the aquatic section of my book. They were relocated after I called wildlife rescuers to help, but the mother duck flew away. I wonder where they are now… #WildCity

My main emotion one year ago was fear. I felt like all I heard were negatives about having a baby. If I’d known what a joyful year we were about to have it would’ve been excitement. Happy birthday to our head bopping, tower building, mischief making, belly laughing little legend.

The ‘re’ also feeds into a certain nostalgia - returning to what? I guess perhaps it’s just ‘wilding’ as per although when I was on a panel recently with @merylE11 she raised v legitimate issues with the word ‘wild’ too. Perhaps I’m overthinking this!

This is great news and I don’t want to nitpick, but I wonder if we need a term we can use in conjunction with rewilding when it comes to our urban areas. Installing a biodiverse green roof isn’t rewilding, nor is it ecological restoration - it’s creating a new space for nature…

Rewilding allows nature to take the lead and is an exciting way to create healthier ecosystems. Today, on Rewilding Day, I’m reaffirming my support for restoring London’s natural habitats by committing £1m more to rewilding the capital.

Without people like no one would know creatures like these Slow Worms even existed - lost without a trace along with their habitat. Sadly this meadow of ‘undeveloped’ land in Kingston will soon be gone. We need to do better for urban nature.

@Flo_Wilk⁩ visiting the wildlife at #Kingsmeadow read about the Slow Worms in ‘Wild City’.

🔊 Starlings in Regent’s Park - a magnificent urban soundscape heard all too rarely today - according to starling numbers have fallen by 66% since the mid-1970s - to think these birds used to be considered pests! Glad to see have fenced the area off too.

This is incredibly disappointing, and out of touch with where the vast majority of British public and even many farmers are at on this issue Ask yourself this question; if these animals where still present, would the public support their eradication? No, they would not

Therese Coffey is no fan of rewilding - says she will not support reintroduction of lynxes and wolves in UK as farmers don’t need that #nfu23
