It is a terrible time. We had planned to hire someone doing complex societies in Latin America or the African Diaspora, but all hires were put on hold this year. We are down about 10 people in my department.
So tired of the academic job market... All this time spent on job apps would've been so much more productively spent on research, teaching, publishing, fundraising, or just relaxing...

Esp when 9 x out of 10 they hire someone they're friends w/, already has a position they're just looking to switch or get something out of their current uni, or has been on the market bouncing btwn postdocs & VPs. Makes it hard for ECRs to get a leg up.

not in terms of scale. the amount of materials to prep for a job application in academia is beyond that requested in most job markets and yes, once you apply for several jobs, you build documents. But... eventually you put in more work to tailor an app as you get more experience

I expected that hiring departments would adapt to the pandemic and be more humane (CV + cover letter for long list, more for short list), and some have, but some job ads I've seen this year have upped the ante, requiring even more materials, and I find that inhumane.
