    The use of these wetland plants as part of a natural remediation also promotes the idea of a as originally intended by the memorial architect.

    OSMRE also determined the site would benefit from the construction of a wetland area, including a wide diversity of water-borne plants. Plants are effective in removing the iron from the water, increasing the water quality

    This aerial shows the progression of the treatment work accomplished by as water travels to the ponds.

    Some or all of the dissolved iron can precipitate as sediment at the bottom of streams & waterways. This is why the treatment site looks orange. Iron isn't the only element that causes but it's the most common.

    is formed when water is exposed to acidic material & the material gets dissolved into water. At the water was exposed 2 pyrite from an old mine, resulting in sulfuric acid & dissolved iron when the water was exposed 2 air

    In 2012 OSMRE provided grant funding & expertise to to help fix from an underground mine near the crash site. OSMRE Appalachian Region staff determined aerating the water from an existing pump would help improve the quality
