  1. Graham MacKenzie with a 13.5 pound 'spring' salmon from the River Oich today. First fish reported from the Ness system this year - well done Graham 🙂

A salmon 'kelt' (fish that has spawned) taking a leaf in the River Ness. Possible that it is beginning to recondition on its way back to sea, or perhaps just an ingrained feeding or aggressive response 🤔

Fantastic turn out for the salmon season opening on the River Ness today. Well done to the organisers and all the best for the forthcoming season 🙂

Flounder are a euryhaline species, meaning they can tolerate a range of salinity levels. This one was observed stalking minnows in the freshwater reaches of the River Ness 🙂

A juvenile pike stalking minnows in the margins of a loch in the Ness system. Amazing to see how it uses it's fins to come to an abrupt stop and then stay perfectly still - a seriously stealthy predator 🙂

A dipper uses its wings to swim to the bottom of the River Ness. The air trapped in it's feathers gives a silvery appearance - almost as cool as salmon 😉

Atlantic salmon and sea trout migrating through the River Ness (2019). White egg strings of female sea lice can be seen trailing behind the dorsal fin, indicating that they are fresh from the sea🙂

The moment a dipper chases and catches a small fish in the River Ness - awesome (footage from 2017)🙂

The mink is an invasive non-native species, having a significant impact on native wildlife such as ground nesting birds and water voles - they also hunt fish😲

After one of natures greatest migrations, a female Atlantic salmon returns to the river where she hatched, creates a nest and deposits her eggs - totally awesome (2018)🙂

Riparian trees and naturally occurring 'Large Woody Debris' in a tributary of the Garry. Provides important cover salmon and trout and helps to create a diverse river channel 🙂

A tide fresh Atlantic salmon negotiates it's way upstream through the Ness. It 'hugs' the river bank and uses the shelter of large boulders to avoid the worst of the flow🙂
