@neilhimself I LOVE your meditations on America and American culture, but I a curious to what degree you see America as culturally monolithic. Have you ever spent any time in old New England?
I guess I misread The House on the Rock as sacred space reflective of America as a whole- my mistake. Let me put my New England question differently. Have you ever been anywhere in New England that could have served as an alternative setting for The Ocean at the End of the Lane?

Sure. Lots of places. The Hempstocks were descendants of Kuttner's (Appalachian) Hogbens, after all.

Thanks so much for responding. I love your work, and for years I have wondered whether my own rapidly vanishing American microculture has a place in your mythos.
