What's the origin of this horror trope? Protagonist's car breaks down—they walk for help, and find something freaky (ex. Thriller/RHPS)?
I think 'remote locations' have been a horror trope at least since the Romantics; the broken down car is just a modern version of the device

For sure, but the broken down car is a quite specific device that I've seen parodied probably a dozen times. Thus curious about its origin.

I guess my point is that although there must be a 'first usage' I doubt that usage is the "origin" if you see what I mean
