Quick reminder for everyone tempted to say something along the lines of '#Covid19 is terrible but it'll help with overpopulation' : 'Overpopulation' is a myth - the problem is not and has never been 'too many people', but the distribution of resources, wealth and housing.

If you genuinely want to reduce population growth, the single best way to do that is to increase equality - particularly gender equality. The more equal a society is in wealth and gender terms, the lower the birth rate.

But it's a myth that there's too many people and lots of them dying would help. We have enough food, land, wealth, for everyone. It's just hoarded by a tiny fraction of the world. Blaming these crises on people in other countries for having 'too many' children is ridiculous.

Plus, COVID-19’s mortality is highest among middle-aged men. They’ve already made their contributions to the population.

more importantly, increased mortality rate doesn't decrease population, it increases it. people who expect to live a long, healthy life have fewer children. people who expect half their children to die early don't have twice as many children, they have 3 or 4 times as many.
