The Lib Dem Foreign Affairs spokesperson is the first British-Palestinian MP and has today been leading the Parliamentary scrutiny of the UK Govs response. Instead Twitter mocks that based off of four words taken out of context and editorialised by a right wing spam account.

Feeling weirdly broken by the voter ID stuff and the university free speech stuff. This government has nothing in the tank except open corruption and culture war bullshit, and they're still fucking winning.

Quite the Queen's Speech Making it possible for the Prime minister to control when a general election takes place, making it harder for people to vote, making it harder to challenge government decisions, and making it harder for anyone to protest about any of this

Alarming to hear that the UK government wishes to slash funding of university archaeology by 50%. Archaeological work has time and again drastically shifted our understanding of the past.

Personally can't wait for the follow-up by STEM professors defending the closure of philosophy departments because "departments aren't free" and "we teach a bit of philosophy of science anyway so what's the issue"

As writes: government is “pushing a vision that only Stem subjects [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] matter & degrees are only worthwhile if you move to a job paying a very high salary". We have to challenge this at source.

Balliol's Broad Street facade, probably in the 1890s, from a collection of early lantern glass slides of Oxford, taken by the Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson.

Quite a day in Westminster. Something repeated by many there and on here is that issues around transparency aren’t important because the public doesn’t care. A) that’s disputable B) even if it were true it’s irrelevant. Public interest and the public interest aren’t the same.

I have no view on what a 'man in a pub' would think, but it's a very bad trend in British politics we skip straight to the meta level argument about polling on any issue.

I’ll tell you what’s fucked up: if Kafka’s Metamorphosis happened today, he would probably get eaten by The Economist staff.

Couldn’t someone have told the authors of that report that even if it’s true that “the system is [no longer] deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities” this is still consistent with the system working as if it is rigged, which is the central claim of institutional racism?

Excoriating piece by on the normalisation of corruption in British politics. "We live in an age when public figures are no longer held to account for their conduct, no longer feel shame or contrition, and simply brazen scandals out".

That said, I'm now slightly regretting my goal for the year of reading as many "first books in series" as possible to determine which ones to continue reading ... and then choosing the series from a list of "best series" in each genre Turns out they're all worth continuing, huh

Just finished Leviathan Wakes - another absolutely stellar book, and now can't wait to watch the Prime adaptation Heartily recommended to anyone who enjoys sci-fi, detective novels and political intrigue, as this kind of does... all of them at once

Why is it that every single time a "progressive alliance" is mentioned in this country, it involves progressive parties standing down for the ONLY centre-left party in Europe that supports the electoral system that makes it necessary?
