    We released a series of interactive maps showing how suspending licenses for unpaid fines hurts Florida families and businesses. Only 3% of Florida driver’s license suspension notices are for dangerous or unsafe driving. The rest are for fines and fees.

    Historically fines were an alternative to custody…we are now imposing them AND sending [individuals] to jail… There is absolutely no basis for incarcerating someone and to, also, impose a fine. -Lisa Foster , Co-Director,

    Money permeates the system. Even when you are in custody. There are fees for phone calls. Fees for deposit in your commissary. Fees to pay your fees. They are charging you even before you are arrested to long past the time you are in custody.

    According to of , if you “violate” probation b/c you’re unable to pay your probation fees at the local level, and are later charged with a federal misdemeanor, you may receive a higher sentence because of that prior “violation.”
