Reagan brand conservatism sending this country in a horrid direction we never really recovered from.

I gotta do some research; the era right before I was born was never really covered in any detail in history classes and I feel like we’re just now getting enough distance and data that we can assess it. (Initial thought was that AIDS/politics scared ppl into higher premiums.)

As someone who was there for all of it. Fuck no. That is almost kind of offensive and reductive to be honest. Reagan era deregulation swept into health insurance like everything in the 80's, and suddenly they could go nuts, destroying the medical loss ratio.

It was all build up for the death knell, when the blues when "for profit" in 93 and everything has just kept going and going. Some companies have medical loss ratios in the 60s. It's unbridled terrifying capitalism in the one industry it's especially horrid for.

This was really not about AIDS, which was too busy being used as another scapegoat to hate gay people until that later point.
