I agree with you re: not the most effective dramatic storytelling. I didn't feel for Thanos' motivations re: Gamora (even though the dramatic tones clearly wanted me to) and that undermined Quill going berserk on him later. I understood why Quill attacked but-

Quill's rage didn't feel genuine because the 'sacrifice' didn't feel real. But knowing less about Thanos' past and hearing about him mostly through story made him mythic. Inevitable. It made his quest seem achievable and not as ridiculous. It was a difficult balancing act. -
