I've had a lot on my mind regarding movie conversations lately, chiefly the difference of "Text" vs. "Texture" - and I think I've unpacked a whole bunch of stuff in my latest column. Cheers :)http://observer.com/2018/05/the-two-crucial-filmmaking-elements-causing-all-your-movie-feuds/ …

Love it. Can I just say one thing about Thanos? Hate his motivations. But the scene with Gamora worked for me. Not because of empathy but because of mystery. I didn't understand why he was sad, but I understood there was more to him. And that was hinted at from the start.

A mystery that literally has no answer or point or coherence and is not addressed within the movie in any way. That is 100% a narrative failing on all levels. And every person who says "the next one will..." these movies never, ever do that.

Hm. Some art is defined as much by the lines you don't draw as the lines you draw. Same goes with good characters. Revealing less can evoke more. I felt it did with Thanos's character. If you didn't? *Shrugs* C'est la vie!

I'm not saying people can't bring meta appreciation into it, that's the whole part of the essay where I talk about projection. I'm just saying that's absolutely not the most effective dramatic storytelling. Besides, if you're talking about the undrawn lines, you communicate that-

My favorite example of which is the Joker in the dark night, never before have I seen chaotic splendor of evil nihilistic glee brought to life with the exact understanding of how to project into it, and why.

I agree with you re: not the most effective dramatic storytelling. I didn't feel for Thanos' motivations re: Gamora (even though the dramatic tones clearly wanted me to) and that undermined Quill going berserk on him later. I understood why Quill attacked but-
