My high school English teacher used the Alien chestburster scene in class as an example of suspension of disbelief, which she simply couldn't muster. She said she laughed her head off in the theater, and people were horrified.

Did you believe her? I always have a hard time believing people who make claims like that. “I couldn’t stop laughing.” Or it seems performative, and I wonder if it’s maybe because they don’t understand or are denying their actual reaction?

Thank you for deep diving into filmmaking. I've got a lot to think about thank to this column.

I'm reading it now! I have to say, your Infinity War review was the best take on the movie I have seen. Articulated a lot of my feelings (and feelings about Marvel in general) beautifully and better than I could myself.

Can we officially call the lack of empathy development for a character "The Thanos Problem"? Has a good ring to it.

To me it's the Bucky problem. I get that Cap loves him and I have sympathy for that, but never have I cared less for someone who is basically a universe's Helen of Troy.

Highlighting this part because everything I've ever read about George Lucas(interviews, anecdotes) indicates he IS one of these people, which makes his friendship with Steven Spielberg so ironic.pic.twitter.com/dwbWIe2u4s

The prequels are probably the least pushy movies when it comes to cinematic affectation ever.
