    Film Crit Hulk‏ @FilmCritHULK 18 May 2018

I've had a lot on my mind regarding movie conversations lately, chiefly the difference of "Text" vs. "Texture" - and I think I've unpacked a whole bunch of stuff in my latest column. Cheers :)http://observer.com/2018/05/the-two-crucial-filmmaking-elements-causing-all-your-movie-feuds/ …

Looking forward to reading. Loved the one from a while ago where you talked about it re: Fury Road.

Really liked the piece. I've criticized certain things (not Spielberg though) previously using the phrase "seeing the strings" but I think a large part of that reaction for me was due to clumsy drama that wasn't properly established.

That I'm being manipulated doesn't actually matter, it's when it fails that it becomes annoying, I should say.

Really appreciated this. Appreciated the whole “either a movie works for someone or it doesn’t” because movies are ultimately about tapping into our emotions in some way. Did you write any thoughts on Spielberg’s Ready Player One?

Ready Player One is interesting because I think it's a good case for Spielberg's skill. I had little interest going in because it just seemed like a weird concept for a movie and the backdrop of gamer gate. But it worked well enough to enjoy it in the moment.

I totally get that story about the projectionist who loved JJ movies cause they surprised him. I see the strings of movies now and sometimes i wish i didnt.

But you cant go back and the desire to often strikes me as a desire to somehow watch movies like you did as a kid, when stories were new cause you were new.

Great essay. Text and texture are both substantive—I’ve never liked ‘substance v style’ for that reason, and your piece resonated for me. Thanks!

@FilmCritHULK writes elegantly why just thinking of movies like ‘the last jedi’ and ‘mad max: fury road’ brings tears to my eyes
