And please please do not think this is a knock on VFX artists, who are the most over-worked and systematically abused general workforce in the film industry. They're incredible. This is only a crisis of philosophy and purpose.

I mean, I like "looks cool" too, but if it doesn't serve a purpose... you get a Transformers sequel. Hell, even the first Transformers had moments that used VFX wisely in its storytelling.
