Like the situation is really bad, y'all. I remember I was talking to someone about the basics of tension and how to make the audience think X was going to happen before Y came in and surprised them, and they just had no idea what I was even talking about it.

They were like "but the shot of the thing looks cool like this." Looks cool. Looks cool. All I ever hear is looks cool. They have no idea what they're even after beyond posturing coolness. It's an epidemic.

And please please do not think this is a knock on VFX artists, who are the most over-worked and systematically abused general workforce in the film industry. They're incredible. This is only a crisis of philosophy and purpose.

I stan Pacific Rim (the first one) like a madman for how hands-on Del Toro went with VFX action setpieces and oversaw every single beat, additionally framing it all within the whole jaeger/drift parable of strength through trust etc. every “cool” moment felt EARNED as a result

Reminds me of the interview with Spielberg's DP for ready player one who saw his contribution to the film erased or altered for vfx in post production

Really felt this during Infinity War. The action staging was so random and disconnected early on. Lots of crashing and movement but no clarity

It's really weird. Half the time the Russos nail the action and make it work for the story, the other half it's just boring punching/explosions. Got really tired by INFINITY WAR's final act.

I also feel like a lot of action, especially the pre-viz stuff is 'staged' for a monitor sized screen too. No thought goes to how it will appear/affect audiences on a huge screen which is why we get shaky-cam/over-editing fatigue.
