Also I can't believe I forgot to mention the basic problem with Thanos, which is that his approach with the population thing was actually WORKING so far... which leads me to have many, many notes.

I thought the movie was fairly clear that his motivation for the stones is for a more, uh, "humane" method, not because his current methods were being stymied. Am I missing something?

Regardless of method, when you kill off half a population, you destroy society's infrastructure. It doesn't recover. it dies with it.

Well, we only have his word for it. Gamora only focuses on the deaths, doesnt seem to consider the results in any form. And hes clearly so mad with it that hell murder half a small ship of refugees just to make sure he doesnt miss any.

Oh I completely agree. I misinterpreted your original comment, thought you were asking a different question. Excellent piece, by the way. Particularly re: lack of consequence for characters' hubris, and the failure to live up to GotG2, BP and T:R's thematic storytelling

It also occurred to me the phrasing was odd. If he killed half of the "life" in the universe, then he killed half the animals and plant life, etc. He might have destroyed half the biome on every planet. That is non-recoverable.

oh god this is just as bad as Agent Smith classifying humans as viruses because "mammals form an equilibrium with the surrounding environment"

If I some Avengers 4 theories I read turn out to be true then we might see that play out in the next one.

oh yeah, that's the first thing I thought of. And trashing social/intellectual infrastructure, thus probably kicking all humans back to subsistence agriculture, would commit us to that population growth rather than the stable population of developed economies.

You seem suspiciously well-versed in the consequences of slaughtering half a population, Hulk. A little TOO well-versed...pic.twitter.com/TNliC09Fxo
