what's amazing about this is the film itself CITES ITS PREDECESSORS in the serialized genre with a short discussion of Flash Gordon. Serialized fiction always says "Did you miss the last film? well, we'll try to catch you up!" but it takes as given you have a lunchbox knowledge.

There is a kinetic, delightful sequence in #InfinityWar where Spidey is webbing all his falling colleagues together and shouts "sorry, I forgot your names!" that's what serialized superhero stories are: smashing action figures together. Critique must approach on those terms.

@FilmCritHULK What say you to this? I understand that you appreciate the view of the critic who wrote the piece, but Mr. Oliveira articulates very well how I feel about it.

Literally already a section on it this on the piece I'm writing. Short version: yes and no. And the fact that people are criticizing each other for believing or the other sort of belies the point.

Honored to get a reply and can’t wait for your piece! I do have to say that I found the critic’s unwillingness to see this as something different than the usual stand- alone narrative and failure to acknowledge the context of the film as dismissive and a little snobby.

Short version: the tone of chatter can be dismissive and snobby, but the argument as to why is most definitely not. But there are greater reasons for this dichotomy.

Ok, then I will address my issue with Brody’s argument. I understand and maybe even agree with his criticism that it does not function as a self contained story, nor does it do well at certain aspects of cinema like establishing relationships. 1/2

Because I felt it did what it intended to do very well. There were things that were underdeveloped, sure, particularly the way everyone accepts the gravity of the threat that Thanons poses, but more exposition would’ve ruined this for me as a fan for 18 films. 3/?

However, I see his failure to accept the film as something different, and to analyze it within the context of its place as the uniting point of many series as unforgiving and unreasonable. I personally appreciated that the movie did not try to adhere to normal conventions 2/? 😬
