That's more about the basic confusion between forced sex-trafficking and prostitution, along with society's equating of the too, along with LEGAL responsibility. What the verge article is more aimed as the notion of moral responsibility within companies to self-police.

Trust me, if there's anything that working with BMD forums taught me, it's that if you want to take care of your users and community, you have to be willing to police and kick people out. It's like being a bouncer at a club, not legal free speech.

And so far, the emphasis on "protecting free speech" is like letting people behave horribly in clubs and doing nothing. It's a stark misunderstanding. Hell, even the most amateur open mic night won't let someone back on stage if they talk about their nazi views.

That's the damn point. We confuse "i should be able to threaten and say whatever and not get kicked out" with "free speech" which is just about not getting thrown in jail for it.

I think your analogy fails to realize the size of these communities. It's easy to moderate a community of a few hundred, but reddit gets 1.5 billion unique visitors/month. If each leaves only 1 comment/month and 1 worker moderates 600 comments/day, staff size would be 83,000!

I am well aware of the scope of moderation efforts and that math actually has nothing to do with moderation. It's about the staff you have to actually look at and handle flagged complaints. All of which are woefully understaffed and would not take that many more. BUT

The problem is 1) what they believe is and is not harrassment in those evaluations and 2) the ability to believe they can create algorithms that do the job of basic human decency. Both those issues are horrendous.

And after a damn decade, they are just NOW beginning to realize how to engage it, and it starts with caring in the first place. The horrible part is that it's never really been that hard.

So let's pretend only 1% of comments are flagged. So 500,000 flagged comments/day. If a moderator reviews 40 comments/hour in an 8 hour shift, they'd still need 1560 fulltime employees. If each make $45,000/year, that's $70million/year on salaries alone!

Again, there are so many problems with that math. 1) It's less that one percent. 2) you think a comment moderator would make 45k?!?!?!??!?!? I wanna live in whatever world you do. 3) Yes it will still take millions and millions of dollars. That's the exact price of curation.

And in the end, it's the exact investment in the well-being of your business. There's a reason facebook is growing in this exact department. And it's because they finally realized the horrific cost of not doing it.

It's very easy to make an online business where community size vastly outstrips revenue (especially if you don't want to sell user data). Should such developers be legislated out of business, because they can't afford to pay an army of moderators? Example: craigslist personals
