Yup. Plot really isn't that important. The vast majority of LOTR viewers had NO IDEA what was going on plot-wise, but they knew how they were supposed to feel at given moments, and about who, and could sense conflicts between characters, and that 100% carries you through a story.https://twitter.com/mjoneillnoise/status/988036392465793027 …

I feel like this is an interesting thing about Batman V Superman. People gave it shit for a nonsensical plot - but it’s quite easy to explain the plot. It’s everything about the experience that ruins the movie for most.

Is it fair to say this also applies to a film like Empire, which is quite fractured narratively but has SUPER clear character priorities?

This is the bread and butter of most complex spy thrillers.

Totally. Haywire, Atomic Blonde, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are all movies where you don't really have any clue what's going on most of the time, but they work because you grasp the broad, general sweep of things.

Exact opposite of how it was for me during the POTC sequels. I knew who everyone was and what they were doing/wanted. I just didn’t know why, so I was lost.

This reminds me of your screenwriting book’s chapter on 5 act vs. 3 act structure. The 5 act provides clearer cues as to when transitions and beats should occur, while the 3 act unintentionally encourages nonsense (action for its own sake) and meandering in the storytelling.

Going to be the wildcard and point to game plots and the idea of a "story" score. Tents to under-cut if a narrative grabs you or not *yes I understand their is lore...but how did we get here again?* Part of why I get antsy with plot-hole = BAD analysis *cough-hi-youtube-cough*

To your point. Take The Godfather for instance. I’d bet a majority of people would struggle to clearly explain the machinations of the plot (I sure as hell fall in this group). But the emotional stakes in every scene are crystal clear. Hence why it connects.
