I miss when they didn't explain magic in movies. It would just, like, happen.

And that's all audiences care about. But when bad writing doesn't do the why, everyone sits around tries to EXPLAIN IT CUZ THATS SURELY WHATS WRONG. nothing an audience likes better than NEEDLESS EXPOSITION. Sorry, i just hate modern studio notes.

I feel like this is an interesting thing about Batman V Superman. People gave it shit for a nonsensical plot - but it’s quite easy to explain the plot. It’s everything about the experience that ruins the movie for most.

I’m very curious about how this relates to a film like Ronin. That’s the film that introduced me to the idea of a macguffin as a kid and, while I LOVE that movie, the fact that you never have any idea what’s in the box frustrated the hell out of my younger self.

I think that's something Marvel really whiffed on with the infinity stones. The stones should have had a personality and aims, but instead they were just powerful things. Made the movies built around them much weaker.

That’s a good point. Hulk’s point really nails that most macguffining is misunderstood. Even something like the idol in the opening Raiders scene has a very clear idea of what it wants: ‘I don’t want to be moved’. Indy coming into conflict with that creates the drama. Cool!
