If i had a dime for how many times I've seen "you are obligated to suffer my abuse and I will call you a coward for not doing so" framed as "rational discourse" within the same sentence, I would.... I dunno... have a shit load of dimes.

I'm not sure what shutting down the comment section does for her though. If she doesn't want to read them, she already has that option. The only thing it does it make it slightly more inconvenient for people to post criticisms.

Actually, all a comment section often does is open up people who are making good comments to get harassed by toxic people there who are "just fucking around" and taking the time to create a good community takes an insane amount of work / its own mods.

But posting good comments doesn't open you up to seeing toxic replies. Going out of your way to read replies opens you up to reading toxic replies. There are much easier ways to avoid the backlash then deleting the whole comment section.

Hi. You do know I participated in / helped moderate (what was probably) the most functional comment section in all film sites, and thus not only have a ton of experience, but a pretty good damn good idea of what I'm talking about, right?

Awesome, then you're probably the best person to help me out. If the author decides that reading the comment section isn't their idea of a fun afternoon, then how does shutting it down for everyone else help them?

Like, I hate reading most comment sections myself, so I usually don't read them. But I couldn't imagine needing someone else to delete things to prevent me from clicking on and browsing them. Do you see where I'm coming from? Sorry if I sound annoying

It's very simple: a comment section is a space you are creating for your readers / users. Any space needs to be moderated and not left to the wolves, or else the wolves run it. Twitter is learning this the hard way.

And the fact that so much internet thinks running with the wolves is just "how it is," is part of the problem.

Again, people would ask us why BMD worked so well and our answer was always the same "we have a one strike policy and if you were a dick, you were gone." A few dicks railed against this. Everyone else thanked form high heaven.
