If i had a dime for how many times I've seen "you are obligated to suffer my abuse and I will call you a coward for not doing so" framed as "rational discourse" within the same sentence, I would.... I dunno... have a shit load of dimes.

Unless a site has those resources and a willing community, there's no way anyone should be subjected to it, especially the writers trying to produce.

Still, a comment section is only read by the people who want to see critiques of the article, no one is "subjected" to it against their will. How does it help the author to make it harder for willing participants to see and read comments?

But posting good comments doesn't open you up to seeing toxic replies. Going out of your way to read replies opens you up to reading toxic replies. There are much easier ways to avoid the backlash then deleting the whole comment section.

Hi. You do know I participated in / helped moderate (what was probably) the most functional comment section in all film sites, and thus not only have a ton of experience, but a pretty good damn good idea of what I'm talking about, right?
