Fun Fact: I was going to write about the deeply-troubling ethos of Ready Player One and its ugly connection to silicon valley / geek culture / tech bro thinking, but thank god someone much smarter did it much better. https://twitter.com/laura_hudson/status/986951429175656448 …

Serious question: how in sam heck can you follow me / readl the essays I write and not grok the idea that I think movies deeply effect people and help shape consciousness? Like... I seriously cannot understand this.

Especially given how many times both art and criticism has established that "it's just a movie" is single most reductive thing anyone can think about anything. I am downright befuddled. Like. what do think we are all doing here?

I normally love what you have to say & even when I do disagree with you I often respect your position because you’re good at what you do. Perhaps I shouldn’t have commented bc I haven’t had the chance to see RP1. Just seems like an overreaction to a summer movie about video games

Giving harmful art a pass just because it's a summer movie about video games is EXACTLY the problem. Enjoyable popcorn fluff has a responsibility to be better because audiences will inherently think of it less critically
