Fun Fact: I was going to write about the deeply-troubling ethos of Ready Player One and its ugly connection to silicon valley / geek culture / tech bro thinking, but thank god someone much smarter did it much better. https://twitter.com/laura_hudson/status/986951429175656448 …

My impression of RP1 (the book) based on what I've heard, is that it's a very shallow wish-fufillment story. Like it doesn't really have any stronger narrative than "You're awesome". Am I wrong to think that makes me worry less about having a troubling ethos?

No you’re right, if anything the movie tones down the problematic wish-fulfillment stuff

To be clear, what I'm asking is basically "can a piece of fiction be too stupid to be harmful?".

I want you to think about all these words very carefully: harmful stupidity, wish-fulfillment, blind entitlement, blindly think you're awesome - and then blow up that kind of philosophy to actual adoption and behavior: yes, you just described Donald Trump.

I'm not being flip here. I think these attitudes might be the most ridiculously harmful bullshit precisely because they seem innocuous, but they're incredibly insidious. Again, people like Laura went through the worst of Gamergate and it was horrific.

But people shrugged it off and didn't see exactly the kinds of problems that these philosophies create. They're a really big fucking deal. And we don't see it, cause often, we're not on the receiving end of the fallout.

You're right. I wasn't thinking about what it meant for other perspectives. I just think a lot about sincere expressions that get lost because they missed the zeitgeist.
