I know Roseanne’s real life politics are dogshit ugly, but my fellow liberals need to calm down over the show. Context matters. The character might be a Trumphead, but she’s also incredibly supportive of her gender-fluid grandson and doesn’t bat an eye at her black granddaughter.

Dude. I love you to bits and pieces, but you gotta back up on this. Seriously. It's basically "racial exceptionalism" only the inverse meaning "my {person] is the exception." It's way of pointing at the ones you love as the exceptions (read: shields) that prove you are tolerant

while unilaterally backing up larger choices that make for systemic oppression of everyone else just like them. This is nothing new. Even the most dark hearted people do it because of what it gives them the appearance of good intent. Milo did it constantly Trump can parade

Caitlyn Jenner, then turn around and vote to kick trans people out of the army. The using of people like this as shields for hate IS just as dogshit ugly, and not recognizing it only empowers the dogshit ugliness. And I'm not going to calm down about it.

I get that point, but if we never recognize any change of heart by those on the right then what’s the alternative? Fuck them forever until they die? Do we think Roseanne personally set up those plot points to shield her bullshit or maybe her liberal writing staff?

Sorry, was catching some zzz. See I don't understand cause what you said doesn't reflect that point. And to go off this new point, the whole thing is that there isn't actually change of heart. It's just the ongoing subconscious denial of people who think they're A-OK.

It's the same thought process that allows literal neo-nazis to think they're not racist, they're just pro-white or something. And to the whole point of this discussion of the alternative:

there is a vast, radical different between saying "fuck them forever til they die" / not showing forgiveness VS. giving a person had such radical views a damn national pulpit to normalize them.

Make no mistake, the show was greenlit to court trump voters and tell them they're right to do so and everything's fine. That's the literal underlying point of the show. Every bit of external conflict with the modern (hilary voters, ethnic characters) is just mean to back that.
