I'l start with this. Im seeing a lot of convo about "oh it's not bad!" or "it's fun" vs. the needed talk about gendered social gatekeeping - BUT HOW IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT WHAT A SUPREMELY WEIRD MOVIE IT IS ON ALMOST EVERY LEVEL

how creepy was it that Halliday created a virtual avatar of his ex/best friend’s wife to be trapped dancing with zombies for eternity?

It was weird how the protag still idolised Halliday after finding that out

I don't know; it seems like something Howard Hughes would have done and he gets the same treatment.

are you saying creating a virtual clone of your ex to be tortured for eternity is not problematic?

No, I'm saying there's some precedent for us as a culture overlooking the awful behavior of "eccentric geniuses."

so because precedent... we should still overlook?

No, so because precedent we shouldn't be surprised that it happens again.

See this is never what i get. Why the fuck do people like you think this is about "being surprised"? Like... knowing its common is meaningless. You havent hacked society and dont see it for what it is. Were calling out the behavior. Not "surprised"

Fair, but is "weird" the right word if we all know it's common?

"Weird" is kind of a catch-all feeling for how I responded to a lot of the character and thematic beats, but isn't entirely accurate I suppose. Perhaps "troubling" is better.
