like...maybe their misplaced sense of self-importance that inevitably collides with reality, and the lie that the world belongs to them, plus the inability to accept that this is a lie and always was, is what engenders their self-loathing and depression.

Something like: you care too much. You should stop caring, because that's why you're depressed. What I say to that is: I'm depressed because people care too little. And it's not that they don't care about me. It feels like they DGAF about anything.

Certainly depression does not stem from having a backbone politically and involving yourself in the world, but involving yourself in a world that is falling through your fingertips probably helps create an environment that makes it more acute.

I do find it really hard to both care about social justice and not be depressed. As a result I'm depressed a lot.

not in of itself, definitely. i think if there is a relationship between them, it has more to do with a given person not processing emotions related to those things well (something i struggle with sometimes), rather than the things themselves
