And sincerest thanks to @kathugins for editing / proofing! (especially given I probably even missed some of those edits, ha)

PS - my favorite thing about this column is the fun of talking about the craft and cinematography of Lady Bird. Which I realized is just a type of thing I need to keep doing way more of :)

The thing I enjoy most about your essays and reviews is kind of like how you talk about craft enhancing emotional impact. Like sometimes I think you’re on a tangent but that tangent then pulls into a point being made. Well written and well examined. -
That means a lot that you notice that. And people don't realize that I really do cut a bunch of stuff that doesn't fit, but really try to make it directed toward the overall point. Many thanks <3

Excellent essay. Felt challenged by it (in a good way) more than once. Side note: I thought THE FLORIDA PROJECT had similarly naturalistic, but still gorgeous and purpose-driven cinematography – wish it had been nominated.

Thank you very much for writing this! It’s helped me understand my toxic attitude to “competitors” fighting for this alluring “spot”, but god damn! This world doesn’t revolve round me, and this energy wasted on hate should be spent on helping my friends <3
