If you don't mind, I was wondering how you felt about the movie's handling of race?

I love the movie & think there's more going on with Kyoko than it gets credit for but I find it a little strange that she has to die in order for Ava to escape which is then followed by Ava replacing parts of herself with an Asian android.

It's not like the movie hasn't put any thought into that aspect of it. Nathan is clearly racist & seems to be coded as white. And as someone on here astutely pointed out, the rejected A.I's seemed to be ones that didn't fit their racial stereotype.

The Asian android was strong-willed and angry, the black android was passive (and didn't have a face). Kyoko, being mute and submissive was allowed to live.

This stuff is interesting but it almost feels in conflict with the stuff I mentioned earlier unless the idea is the stripping of her body parts is done with respect (which feels kinda problematic) or that Ava is supposed to come across as callous (which didn't feel like the case)

I think Garland simply didn't think about the racial implications, at all. Which is not terribly surprising (see also: Spring Breakers), but disappointing.

Then he needed to actually subvert the stereotype of the silent docile Asian woman.

Having a white lady construct herself from bits of dead women of color only works the same way if the white lady isn't the person we're all supposed to be rooting for.

Exactly. Plus it screws up the Bluebeard metaphor.
