What the term for a movie with music that's NOT a musical?? GREASE, SOUND OF MUSIC, and FROZEN are musicals because they sing their dialogue/exposition.. What about BLUES BROTHERS, THE COMMITMENTS, HEDWIG, or SING STREET? The music happens when the band plays. Is that a musical?

I don't know that there's a specific name for it outside the genre each otherwise occupies, i.e. SING STREET is a "coming of age drama" that's about a band.

There was a whole crazy thread with @FilmCritHULK last year about this. Just call ‘em musicals. BLUES BROTHERS, SING STREET, and ONCE in particular all have musical sequences that drive the story and/or character development forward and aren’t simply performance.

All musicals are genre hybrids anyway, so if a movie had three musical numbers, its a musical too.

Eh... BLUES BROTHERS is the main one that feels like "actually a musical" to me personally, because the sequences are partly locked-off at least stylistically, but it's not a thing I'm going to the mat for :)

What about something like COCO? That has musical numbers that are clearly Diegetic.

The adaptation of stage musicals to film just highlights how ridiculous this reluctance to call a spade a spade is. There's Chicago, where they decided it all takes place in Roxie's mind, and then you have Cabaret, where all the non-diagetic numbers were cut. They're all musicals
