You probably shouldn’t focus on one single phrasing written in jest (I agree with u) and ignore the actual content of what I’m saying. You basically predicted someone’s career based on what they think of a Marvel movie. That’s just ridiculous, punching or not. Can’t you see that?

I’m surprised you’re capable of that level of uninformed judgement. I enjoy your writing and your book, but this is a bad look. You don’t even know why they consider the film heinous and you seriously jump to predicting their career in academia?! “You can do better. Try it!”

Not just their success in academia, but their humanity!! To contrast that, I mentioned the punching in the face to make you realize how crazy your statement is. You don’t know these people and you judge them harshly based on what they think of Black Panther. Wow.

Dude, you have to be able to understand when a prediction is really a warning. An if then. And trust me, I've seen this a hundred times before, again and again, this is how it goes. Don't get lost in it. If you listen to me elsewhere, do it here too.

It’s a silly warning, then. I want to tell the people of this world to not question their humanity if they happen to not like Black Panther. And I’m sorry, while I do respect you as a writer, I’m not going to trust you on everything just because. You don’t get a carte blanche.

Real question: why does this bother you so much?

It’s an ugly thing to say about a person and I guess I was particularly shocked to read this from someone with your sensibilities. There is no reason to go there and while the people you basically insulted won’t ever hear about it, I don’t think this is a good thing to do.

I'll come back to this. But first I'll say why it bothers me so much, so you can understand. I talk to a lot of film students and young people who come into this industry. And i mean a lot. And all of them have the same dreams and I mean this sincerely when I say I genuinely want

them all to succeed. But in all that dialogue, you pick up on attitudes and beliefs the kids have about how movies work and how they talk about them - and with certain kids that point toward behaviors that tend to undo those kid's pursuit of those dreams.

So the comment may seem innocuous to you, I know that, and I get that, but for me it's absolutely a dog whistle for many of the other things I've talked about in this thread. Someone who confronts a class like that, trust me, is worrying. And I've seen it play out horribly many

times. But the most important thing of all to understand is I didn't even it to them. I said it to a bright student who I wanted to not worry about them, so that bright studen can carry on with their strength and confidence. That's a world of endless difference.

I get that, but that’s like a dad encouraging a kid by telling him how the other kids suck and he’s actually great. I don’t think encouragement of one needs to humiliate the other. You could’ve had a dialogue with her on the film instead of this unnecessary conversation with me.

And while I do think that you’re acting in your best conscience,I can’t just adopt your experience as if it’s mine.I’m training to be a doctor and many experienced doctors try to make you a cynic from the start. Like, fuck that. It’s not a one way street to hating these patients.
