Critics used to use the exact same language to hate on pulpy noir films, when really it was the birth of brilliant ideas and american cinema. It is both the height of arrogance and judging books by covers. Do better. Really. You can. You're just not trying.
So the comment may seem innocuous to you, I know that, and I get that, but for me it's absolutely a dog whistle for many of the other things I've talked about in this thread. Someone who confronts a class like that, trust me, is worrying. And I've seen it play out horribly many

times. But the most important thing of all to understand is I didn't even it to them. I said it to a bright student who I wanted to not worry about them, so that bright studen can carry on with their strength and confidence. That's a world of endless difference.

I get that, but that’s like a dad encouraging a kid by telling him how the other kids suck and he’s actually great. I don’t think encouragement of one needs to humiliate the other. You could’ve had a dialogue with her on the film instead of this unnecessary conversation with me.
