I have really similar conversations when it comes to something like scorsese. The ugly truth is we have to be willing to let the audience be wrong about what they're seeing. Because the alternative is wanting art to punish people so we don't have to.

It reminds me of the discussion around "bad fans" of Breaking Bad as well. Stories about toxic people seem to always have that dual reading problem.
