You're right that it's trying to make that point but it frustrates me still. Maybe it works too well in that my frustration with the characters is misplaced as frustration with the narrative...

The real frustration is with society. The show is honest to its portrayal and nature of how people run from their problems (keep in mind rick's also an alcoholic who hasn't bottomed out yet) - the desire to correct this comes from the same frustration of reality.
