Because it's literally about toxicity. Often with a depth of understanding and articulation few shows ever achieve, so they find kinship with it, without realizing it's also headed to either: 1) suicide 2) growth and catharsis 3) horror of perpetual the cycle.https://twitter.com/transgenica/status/964059750630592512 …

They think Rick is an unironic champion for whatever their cause is. Before i even watched the show i saw way too many a bro claim that "hes a genius who isnt afraid of PC and puts women in their place".
-
Its almost like the catch phrase rick never said more than a handful of times but is still hailed as the one thing he says all the time everywhere, it makes me think that there are 2 shows.

Follow up why does Bojack Horseman not seem to have the same fanbase problem despite being a very similar show?
-
Because Bojack Horseman does what Rick and Morty does not, which is "pulling back hard and abrupt enough that it's impossible to miss the bigger picture".

I'd say it's similar to how a lot of people end up unironically getting behind the Imperium Of Man, in Warhammer 40K when it's ostensibly about "these people are doing everything entirely wrong". They just buy into the power fantasy and Holy quest rhetoric

It's kind of ironic that they feel attracted to it and not realize its nature. I wonder if an ultimate resolution would be met with realization, oblivioua toxicity or both

This feels similar to what you talk about in your Fight Club article… except I hope Dan and Justin realize what they are doing?
