He doesn't MEAN it as a defense, but it is in a way. Just as in a recent podcast with @aoscott at Slate he veered into the "all men are guilty" pseudo-defense -- the tact chosen by certain evangelical leaders in defense of the President. Maybe justice first, nuance later?

1. Taking him out of this, because your tagging is kind of gross. 2. I listened to that and what a horrific misunderstanding of his guilty point. Which was about culpability and men taking responsibility for actions across board.

"What I find most ethically troubling about Mr. Allen’s work at present is the extent to which I and so many of my colleagues have ignored or minimized its uglier aspects." Gosh, if only there had been somebody pointing out those aspects over the years.

How have you found his movies over the years? I have not seen enough of them to speak credibly on it. A few years ago I watched Irrational Man and it really came off as an example of auteur theory for creepy auteurs. None of the people in my film group liked it.

Society as a whole put a lot more effort into pretending that it wasn't gross until relatively recently. Child porn was criminalized in 1978. Brooke Shields and Tatum O'Neal started their careers as child sex symbols. Etc.
