So-bad-it's-good movies are just good movies. If you like them, you like them. With that, there's poorly executed movies that can be fascinating in their choices and you can derive a lot of entertainment in looking at that M.O., but I never like shitting on anything.https://twitter.com/Abstruse/status/957198286905135104 …

What do you think makes the difference between a bad movie and a so-bad-it's-good movie?

By extension: What if the tropes of a genre are themselves things you would counsel against (clumsy exposition via dialogue/deus ex machina laziness/whatever)? Is a "good" film in this genre, just an objectively "bad" film? Or must we abandon all notions of Objectivity?

I'm thinking here of films in categories I personally don't enjoy for these reasons (super hero comic book flicks / video game movie franchises); Films which may mimic sub-par storytelling techniques of the source material and therefore feel familiar/cool to fans.

I think you're being over-sensitive to tropes themselves. There's no trope or device that is inherently bad. Just deft execution, which doesn't mean "invisible" either. It means purposeful.

I agree. Although I do feel like even poorly executed techniques sometimes get a pass by virtue of the genre in which they're employed, because they are in some sense native/definitive....

... The extent to which they are 'defensible' is the extent to which one considers genre as the appropriate context in which to appraise them.
