Would you agree with the maxim that the worst thing a piece of media can be is dull?

Excellent observation. I feel Prometheus is poorly executed but I am entranced by it.

By extension: What if the tropes of a genre are themselves things you would counsel against (clumsy exposition via dialogue/deus ex machina laziness/whatever)? Is a "good" film in this genre, just an objectively "bad" film? Or must we abandon all notions of Objectivity?

I'm thinking here of films in categories I personally don't enjoy for these reasons (super hero comic book flicks / video game movie franchises); Films which may mimic sub-par storytelling techniques of the source material and therefore feel familiar/cool to fans.

Even the worst possible movie has some trace remaining of what made its creators want to make it in the first place. Some nugget of goodness that shines through from the original premise. One scene that works. One moment that succeeds. A character. A special effect. Something.

Reading you made me realize this a while back. I don't call "bad" movies I love "bad" anymore and it feels nice

I once saw someone who gave movies a negative rating -7/10 if they were enjoyably badly executed, reasoning that a -7/10 is better than a 4/10, that the absolute value of a movie us greater than the technical value.
